By the end of the course, the participant should:

  • Be able to explain how 3D printing can be used for product design and development
  • Be familiar with various 3D printing methods, as well as the pros and cons of each method
  • Be familiar with an FFF printer and its specifications
  • Be able to use a CAD software to create a simple 3D model
  • Understand how various print parameters affect the 3D print result
  • Be able to use a 3D printer interface software to carry out the printing process
  • Appreciate the 3D scanner as a device to generate 3D models

Session 1

  • Introduction to 3D Printing
  • 3D Printing Methods and Their Pros and Cons
    • Material Extrusion: Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF)
    • Vat Photopolymerisation: Stereolithography Apparatus (SLA)
    • Powder Bed Fusion: Selective Laser Sintering or Melting (SLS / SLM)
    • Directed Energy Deposition (DED)
  • Advantages and Disadvantages of 3D Printing
  • Applications of 3D Printing Across Various Industries
    • Aerospace
    • Automotive
    • Construction
    • Fashion & Jewellery
    • Food
    • Medical and Dental
  • Impacts and Issues Associated with 3D Printing
  • Demo 3D Print


Session 2

  • Introduction to Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software
  • Familiarisation with CAD Interface
    • Extrusions and Revolutions to Create Solids
    • Moving Solids
    • Camera Controls (Zoom, Pan, Different Views)
    • Inserting Solids and Creating Holes
    • Resizing, Copying and Pasting, Grouping
  • Exporting 3D Models as a 3D Printable File Format
  • Using a Printer Interface Software to Prepare for 3D Printing
  • Varying Print Parameters and the Effects on Print Results
  • Loading and Unloading of Filaments for an FFF printer

Session 3

  • Planning for 3D Modelling
  • Product Design Challenge and Submission

Session 4
3 hours

  • Presentation of 3D Printed Products
  • Introduction to 3D Scanning
    • Operating Principles of a 3D Scanner
    • Applications of 3D Scanning
    • Hands-on
  • Short Quiz (consisting of MCQs and short answer questions) (1 hour)
  • Final Questions & Answers on 3D Printing, 3D Designing and 3D Scanning (0.5 hour)
